WO2 Chris Smart

I am WO2 Chris Smart. I joined the Army in June 1985 at Bovington as a junior leader.  I am now in my 22nd year with my end of service date September 2009.  I have been on several operational tours including Belize, Northern Ireland, Kosovo and Iraq.  I also served in Germany for 11 years.

I have done a million and one things in the Army and loved every minute of it.  I have always been a keen sportsman playing Football, Rugby, Hockey, Vollyball, and last but not least (probably because I'm getting older) - Golf.  Being in the Army you do many, many things for charity and most of it involves being athletic so I thought it was about time that I did something individually and combine sports with raising money.  I am married to Angela and have 2 children, a son and a daughter.

WO1 Clive Towell

I am WO1 Clive Towell with the Kings Royal Hussars regiment.  I joined the Army in 1984 as a Main Battle Tank Gunner.  Since then I have been busy throughout my career -training and taking part in many of the Army’s big Exercises.  I have been on many operational tours including Belize, Iraq, Bosnia and Northern Ireland.

I assumed my present appointment as the first Royal Armoured Corps Sergeant Major in January 2007. I have two daughters and my interests include skiing, walking, off-road motor biking and boxing.

Q:  Chris and Clive, how did you meet?
Chris:
Clive and I first met in 1993 as I was part of a training team which trained the regiment Clive is in for their tour to Northern Ireland.  Throughout our careers, which is the norm, we kept bumping into each other through various exercises and operational tours etc.  We are now posted at the same place DRAC (director royal armoured corps) where both of us will finish our serving time.

Q:  How did Charity Support come about?
Chris:
Charity Support came about by wanting to do something which changes lives, I think there are thousands of us that sit and think 'I wish I did that' or 'I'm going to do that next year', but never get around to it.   The two of us have been like that for years even though we have done many things during our time like half marathons etc but this is a much larger challenge which, as the organisers, allows us to really get involved.

Q:  What is your training programme?
Clive:
Our training programme is rather intense, we train 6 days a week, broken down as follows -

We train together on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Monday is a run for 40 mins - Weds 60 mins - Friday 80 mins.
Tuesday,Thursday and Saturday is individual 30 mins just to loosen off.
That is the first month (NOV) and then it increases every month.
Month 2 (DEC) Mon,Wed,Fri 60.mins,90 mins 120 mins       Tue Thu Sat 40mins
Month 3 (JAN) Mon,Wed,Fri 90 mins 120 mins 160 mins      Tue Thu Sat 40 mins
Month 4 (FEB) Mon,Wed,Fri 120 .ins 180 mins 220 mins     Tue Thu Sat 40 mins
Month 5 (MAR) Mon,Wed Fri 180 mins 220 mins 260 mins   Tue Thu Sat 40 mins

Q:  Your Army training and background must be a huge help to you?
Chris:  Being in the Army makes you keep on top of your fitness and I think anyone could probably get up and run a marathon, but would probably take them a long time - about 9-10 hours or not finish at all.  However the training we are doing is to get us to finish the Marathon in under 4 1/2 hours.....fingers crossed!

Q:  What do your family and friends think?
Chris:
Both our families and friends have been fully supportive although it was a shock initially and they were all asking 'What are you doing? -  Is this a mid life crisis?'  But once explained to them, they are all now really behind us.  To be honest both of us asked the same questions ourselves but when something inspires you as much as charities like Help for Heroes has to us, you have to go for it.

Q:  You are hoping to raise lots of money?
Chris:
Raising any money for charity is one of the most satisfying accomplishments in anyone's life and I think the buzz will just get bigger and better as the totals (hopefully!) grow.  We know every penny counts to all charities so even giving a penny is a penny more and lives can be changed.

Q:  Are any of your charities raising money for a specific project?
Clive:
Help for Heroes are trying to raise enough money to build a swimming pool for the military hospitals.  We are not aware (to date) of any specific projects for our local Age Concern or for St Christopher's Hospice but the fact that they deal with and care for people is a constant project and if these type of charities are overlooked, the quality of life for a lot of people will end.  St Christopher's need £12 million per year to maintain their level of service and care.

Q:  What are your plans for Charity Support for the future?
Chris:
The plans for Charity Support in the future is to help as many charities that are dear to our hearts as well as lesser known charities who need as much if not more help than the larger charitable organisations.
